I overheard that Ron Clamser (whom I was fortunate to meet once) is taking a Leave of Absence from his ministry, for personal reasons. During this time, the Evangelist Bauer will serve as acting rector for Plattsburgh.

Ron, hope you'll have time to come visit sometime!

I heard through the grapevine that a certain D.Ev in the LA area has given up his office. I don't have any of the particulars. Any truth to this? Anyone?

I used to vist Plattsburg years ago. Can someone tell me if Priest Ward SR is still around? Believe it or not I used to ride my bicycle there from Ottawa. Mind you I was a little slimmer then.

It was announced on Sunday that Pr. Phillip Kuhl, rector of Willow Grove is taking a leave of absence. District Evangelist John Doerner will be the acting rector.

Leave of Absence

When someone takes a leave of absence two things can happen. One they leave and never come back or two they came back renewed and refreshed. I took a leave of absence. In that time I visited other churches and I learned all sorts of new things. I took a bible study course. I even went back to the synagogue and read from the Torah. It was a wonderful experience. I found people of faith everywhere. They worshipped in diverse and interesting ways. I began to write and play music again. I took all of the good things I learned and brought them back with me because in the end this is where I belong. This where God wants me to be. I can't explain a "calling" to someone that has never had one but this is my calling. Others may find their calling elsewhere. I am here (the New Apostolic Church) because I want to be. I am here because I believe that this is where God wants me to be. I am glad I took a leave of absence.

NAC Thorn in the Side

District Evangelist Klein retired Jan. 10, 2009. He did not resign. His letter to the congregations gave the impression that he was looking forward to remaining active as a member of his congregation.

Hank Ward is a DEV, and currently lives somewhere in the Albany/Schnectady area. He is due to retire soon, if he hasn't already.

Deaconess...

D.Ev. Klein retired at the ripe old age of 47? He isn't having any health issues is he? He is one of those that always goes out of his way to be kind to everyone. I hope all is well with him and his family!

Isn't voluntary retirement and resigning basically the same thing? Retiring usually involves an age issue whereas resigning is usually for other reasons.

The church in the past couple of years have given AB's the option of their departure from the ministry being referred to as a "retirement" (which can include a formal "retirement" blessing) if they have held various ministerial positions for at least 25 years... which the Dist. Ev. had.

I can assure you, there are more options than these two. I took a LOA with full anticipation of returning. I should have been clued when I was, in effect, benched prior to the official start date of the LOA. In addition, I asked specifically NOT to be visited as I was working out marital problems. Guess who came knocking on my door mid-LOA? You got it, two a$$wipes from the NAC trying to push their way in. I promptly and politely told them we were eating dinner and closed the door. This did not deter these two TB'ers though. They promptly went to my mother's house (right next door) and starting asking questions after she had a few and got all the information (confidential) they needed. I immediately wrote to the Apostle and resigned.

I thought you simply moved to a city that had no NAC and then moved back? Which is it? A "calling" or "geography"?

The retirement "change" creates an interesting issue. As deaconess pointed out, the recent policy of the church is to "allow a minister to retire with honor" (no comment as to the meaning of that) after 25 years of service in various ministries starting with sub-deacon. That being said, are you looking at a serious shortage of ministers in coming years? There doesn't seem to be many ordinations (especially at the deacon or priest level). KnotLost pointed out that the DEv that retired was only 47. He became a sub-deacon at 22. There are a couple of priests in the Los Angeles area that were ordained as sub-deacons while in their mid-teens (15-17). As those priests are now close to 40 in age, the option to retire with 25 years of service is a viable option for them. However, if all those brothers who were ordained at such a young age in the 80's to early-90's decide to retire, who is left? I am not advocating "working" until one is 65 necessarily but there must be a better succession plan (aside from certain families having sons to carry on their legacy) if there is to be ministers left in the church.

Wow, the minsters are getting to be like firemen and policemen, retirement after 20 or 25 years LOL, do they get a full pension too?

Do most people still address retired ministers by their last office after their retirement? It was usually easy to tell that a minister was retired, but if a District Evangelist retires at 47 and is still addressed as a District Evangelist I could see where it could lead to a bit of confusion for members.

...or they will start ordaining $hit disturbers that will get the work done and face the uncomfortable issues that need to be faced without worrying about making daddy, uncle, grandpa (insert relation here) look bad.

When that can happen, then the new SD (not sub-deacon) can admit that certain decisions were wrong and bad choices were made. They need to lead with love not the fear that (insert relation here) will be hurt or upset because they "dishonoured" them.

Actually a good investment of time. Bible study was always something that I endorsed even from the beginning. Somewhere I remember the church giving every family a leather bound bible and encouraging them to read it. Must have been some other church.

If you want the story of my life buy the book. Simply put, I took a leave of absence and moved away. Circumstances made it possible to move to a city where there is a New Apostolic Church.
