Question: The demographic shift is a popular topic in the media lately. How is the Church reacting to this? Can it even react to it?
Answer: There are projections for Germany which show that our membership in some regions will decrease very significantly by the year 2020. In some uban regions we have the additional problem of disproportionate numbers of elderly members. There is little we can do to counter this trend. What we want to do is concentrate more on the inactive, non-attending members. Pariticularly among the younger generations there is a tendency to slip into the non-practising status. So we are looking at strategies for countering this trend.
