Memo for Audio/Visual Teams
Please allow me to clarify something very important for our congregational audio-visual teams across the district. I recently experienced a Divine service where the proclamations spoken by the minister were also posted on the screen; namely the absolution, consecration and benediction. Upon reflection, I’m concerned because the power of these moments within our Liturgy is in the hearing and believing of these words. To read them does not bring us to this desired effect. I felt a “disconnect” as many eyes within the congregation were drawn to the screen. Additionally, the minister may miss a word here and there in the proclamations, and the discrepancy may also be distracting. Given all considerations, I don’t believe this is a good practice and ask that we discontinue it.
However, having the Lord’s Prayer posted on the screen may be a good practice since the congregation says the prayer out loud. Naturally, we generally have our eyes closed during this prayer, but it may be helpful for those who may not know our version of the Lord’s Prayer.
